Tschiggfrie Excavating Co. was founded by Ed and Joan Tschiggfrie in the fall of 1963. Their children, Rod and Vicki, have been a part of the company management since the 1980s. The company was started with just one piece of equipment and has since grown to over 400 machines. The company started out grading farm fields and digging basements and has since grown to cover diverse work categories consisting of construction management, concrete paving and structures, underground utilities, earthwork, trucking, and demolition. This has allowed Tschiggfrie Excavating Co. to help transform Dubuque and surrounding communities for decades. Experience is essential in construction, and Tschiggfrie has many loyal employees with decades of experience. With a workforce of over 100 employees, Tschiggfrie Excavating Co. is ready and able to help with any project that comes along.

In 1962, Edward Tschiggfrie and his wife Joan purchased a bulldozer for about $2,400.Ed Tschiggfrie Jacket copy

They found many farmers interested in hiring them for work. They purchased additional equipment and hired their first employee the same year and by 1963 were in business.

Work for private residents was the first work performed. This included digging basements and breaking ground for new construction. The company was also involved in flood prevention during the 1965 flood that threatened downtown Dubuque.

In their first 50 years of business, the company has taken on many high-profile projects in the Tri-State Area.  The company has assisted in many local emergencies like the flooding, train derailments, water and sanitary main breaks, sinkholes, and large slide repairs.  In addition, the company has helped expand the City of Dubuque with Tschiggfrie-initiated subdivisions like Shady Oaks, Clarke Crest, Birch Acres, Marna Ridge, Emerald Acres, and Alpine Park Community.
